European Union Dispatches Aircraft and Crews to Support Wildfire Fighting Efforts Across the Continent

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – As wildfires persist across multiple regions of Europe, countries have intensified their collaborative firefighting initiatives. Belgium and Spain reached out for help through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism after fires overwhelmed local resources. Both nations deployed aircraft, helicopters, and ground personnel alongside their own teams. Additionally, authorities utilized satellite mapping technology to monitor fire zones and aid emergency planning in several European areas.

EU wildfire support brings aircraft, crews and satellite mapping to affected regions.

Belgium received two rescEU firefighting planes from Sweden for operations in the Hautes Fagnes region. Germany and Norway each contributed two helicopters, while Dutch aircraft also played a role in the response effort. The latest assessments indicate that the fire has scorched over 3,000 hectares. Belgian emergency services, military units, farmers, and international teams collaborated across the impacted zone. Meanwhile, authorities kept restrictions in place around roads and water sites used by responders.

By Monday evening, nearly 500 personnel and over 120 vehicles had participated in the Belgian firefighting efforts. Ground crews focused on accessible areas, while aircraft targeted parts of the fire that remained hard to reach. Farmers assisted in maintaining water supplies for emergency teams operating near the fire. Residents of Sourbrodt were permitted to return home, though some residents of Küchelscheid still face restricted access due to ongoing fire conditions.

French Firefighters Enhance Efforts in Spain’s Aragón Region

To bolster firefighting efforts in Aragón, Spain received 104 firefighters and 36 vehicles from France. When European aid arrived, approximately 16,000 hectares had already been burned in the area. The Aragón authorities issued red alert for 14 fire danger zones on Aug. 18, an increase from eight the day before. Officials also highlighted the presence of extremely dry fuels across several central and northern locations, adding further pressure on crews already battling active fires and monitoring vulnerable regions.

Satellite mapping support from the Copernicus Emergency Management Service has been vital for response teams in Belgium, Spain, Greece, Germany, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, France, and Italy. These satellite maps allow emergency managers to estimate burned areas and locate active fire zones. The European Commission continues to coordinate international assistance through the civil protection framework. This system facilitates the movement of personnel and equipment across borders upon request from national authorities.

European Firefighting Resources in Place for Multiple Emergency Situations

At the start of the 2026 wildfire season, Europe maintained a joint reserve comprising 22 firefighting aircraft and five helicopters. Authorities also stationed 777 firefighters from 14 countries in Cyprus, Greece, Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal. This shared resource pool enables governments to seek assistance when their national capacity is overwhelmed. Emergency coordinators can then match requests with available aircraft, crews, vehicles, and other resources provided by participating nations.

The current efforts address several separate fire incidents rather than a single cross-border event. Belgium continues to rely on aircraft, helicopters, ground teams, and local logistical support in the Hautes Fagnes. Spain has integrated French firefighters and vehicles into its firefighting operations in Aragón. Across Europe, emergency services are also utilizing satellite data to monitor affected regions. By the end of July, the continent’s burned area was approximately 2.5 times higher than typical levels for this time of year.
