MADRID / RankWire.AI / – In August, approximately 2,150 individuals died from heat-related causes across Spain. This figure is based on official daily mortality data published by the Carlos III Health Institute. The MoMo monitoring system recorded 2,149 excess deaths linked to extreme temperatures during the month. This is the second-highest August figure recorded since the start of national data collection in 2015. Consecutive European heatwaves continue to drive seasonal mortality rates to historic levels on the Iberian Peninsula, with Spain’s August death count nearing 2,150.

The record for August heat-related deaths was set in 2025, with 2,184 fatalities. Public health records show that from May 15 to August 31, a total of 5,234 lives were lost due to thermal stress. This marks the highest summer mortality total documented by the country’s public health system since tracking began, exceeding the previous peak of 4,652 deaths during summer 2022. As authorities assess the situation, they note the significant strain placed on regional emergency response teams caused by these extreme temperatures.

Data provided by the Ministry of Health indicate that older adults faced the greatest mortality risks during the heatwaves. Of the 2,149 deaths in August, 2,064 were individuals over 65, including 1,285 who were over 85 years old. The gender breakdown revealed that 1,283 of the deceased were women, while 866 were men. Medical experts observed that prolonged high ambient temperatures worsen chronic cardiovascular and respiratory conditions among vulnerable populations.

Regionally, Catalonia in northeastern Spain registered the highest number of heat-related fatalities, with 1,164 deaths during August. Valencia followed with 227 deaths, while Andalusia recorded 138 heat-related deaths. Local health authorities in these areas intensified community outreach efforts and increased access to cooling centers. However, extreme nighttime temperatures continued to impede the recovery process for affected residents.

According to meteorological updates from Spain’s State Meteorological Agency AEMET, heat risks remain high into early autumn. Forecasters confirmed that a period of unusually hot weather for September affected central and southern provinces, with daytime temperatures significantly exceeding seasonal norms. Climatologists note that Europe is experiencing more frequent, intense, and extended summer heat episodes, aligning with broader climate warming trends.

National health authorities continue collaborating with local governments to strengthen preventative care strategies and track high-risk patient data. Emergency medical teams have updated operational procedures to address health complications caused by heat rapidly. Public health alerts remain in effect, urging citizens to reduce outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day and stay properly hydrated amid persistent unseasonable weather conditions.

Once September’s final surveillance data are available, agencies plan to compile a comprehensive review of summer mortality. Experts emphasize that long-term urban infrastructure improvements and better public housing insulation are critical to safeguarding vulnerable groups from recurrent extreme heat events. Updated mortality statistics will be accessible through official government portals to guide future health policy decisions.
