Urgent UN Appeal as Ebola Outbreak in DRC Surpasses 6,000 Cases Amid Growing Crisis

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – United Nations humanitarian leader Tom Fletcher has called on governments and donors to step up their support for the Ebola response in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The epidemic has spread to six provinces and continues to place immense pressure on health services. Fletcher emphasized to UN member states that humanitarian efforts require more rapid funding and dependable access to communities affected by the virus. This appeal comes amid reports of thousands of infections, widespread displacement, and ongoing insecurity in multiple regions.

DRC Ebola outbreak tops 6,000 cases amid urgent UN appeal
UN officials urge faster support for the DRC Ebola outbreak response and frontline health teams.

The World Health Organization announced that the outbreak had surpassed 6,000 confirmed cases by September 1, resulting in nearly 3,000 fatalities. Infections have been reported across sixty health zones, including Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, Bas-Uélé, and Tshopo. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus described this event as the second-largest Ebola outbreak ever documented. He further noted that the virus is spreading more rapidly than during previous outbreaks. Since the crisis began, Ituri has remained the primary hub of transmission.

The initial detection of the outbreak occurred in May 2026, with tests confirming the presence of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola. WHO classified this as a public health emergency of international concern. By August 26, officials confirmed 5,794 cases and 2,786 deaths. The same report recorded 1,293 recoveries. Response teams continue testing suspected cases, conducting contact tracing, and providing treatment. They are also engaged in community outreach efforts within the affected districts.

Conflict and Displacement Worsen Challenges for Responders

The Ebola fight unfolds amid a broader humanitarian crisis across the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Fletcher stated that nearly 11 million people require urgent humanitarian assistance due to ongoing conflict, displacement, hunger, and malnutrition. Violence in eastern regions has restricted access for medical and relief workers. The United Nations activated an emergency response mechanism on June 9. Humanitarian hubs in Bunia and Beni are actively supporting operations closer to communities impacted by the outbreak.

Healthcare workers remain among those most exposed to the virus. Fletcher highlighted that over 40 health workers have died from Ebola during this outbreak. Earlier figures from WHO indicated 151 confirmed infections among health and care personnel by July 30, including 44 fatalities. Increased infection-control measures, clinical training, and protective support are being implemented by health agencies. WHO has also identified transmission chains that remain untraced, along with deaths occurring outside treatment centers.

Funding Demands Increase as Vaccine Research Continues

The updated 2026 humanitarian response plan for the Democratic Republic of the Congo requires a total of $2.1 billion, with $300 million earmarked specifically for Ebola-related activities. Fletcher urged for larger and more adaptable contributions to support both the ongoing outbreak response and broader humanitarian priorities. WHO has separately indicated that the government-led six-month Ebola plan needs $1.3 billion. This funding is crucial for surveillance, treatment facilities, laboratories, community engagement, and other essential public health operations across the affected provinces.

On September 1, WHO also revised its vaccine guidance as research continues into protection against the Bundibugyo Ebola virus. The organization stated that current evidence does not confirm whether the licensed Ervebo vaccine offers significant protection against this particular Ebola species in humans. It recommended that vaccination should only occur within research protocols during ongoing clinical trials. WHO and Africa CDC are assisting the Congolese authorities as teams work to identify cases, treat patients, and curb transmission across the six impacted provinces.
