Europe Anticipates Record Year in Wind Power Growth with 8.8 GW Installed in First Half of 2026

BRUSSELS / RankWire.AI / – Europe is heading toward a historic year for wind power development after adding 8.8 gigawatts (GW) of new capacity in the initial six months of 2026. This represents a 30% rise compared to the same period last year. According to the latest industry data published by Wind Europe, the turbines recently commissioned are capable of producing enough electricity to supply roughly 7 million European homes. They also displace fossil fuel imports equivalent to 25 liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers per year. The continent’s energy transition is accelerating thanks to high installation activity over the summer months, positioning Europe for a record-breaking year in wind power installations.

Europe on track for record year in wind power with 8.8 GW added
Industrial wind farm installations operate across green agricultural fields in rural Europe.

Germany led regional expansion during the first half of 2026 by adding 3.4 GW. This accounted for approximately 40% of all new wind capacity in Europe during this period. Over 500 individual turbines were commissioned across Germany, including 423 onshore and 84 offshore installations. Other European countries such as Denmark, Poland, Portugal, and France also reported significant increases in capacity. Notably, Ukraine managed to add over 400 MW of operational wind capacity despite ongoing conflict, while Belgium brought an additional 60 MW online to its grid.

Forecasts published in WindEurope’s Autumn Report project that total European wind capacity additions will reach 24 GW by the end of 2026. This would set a new record for annual installation volumes in the industry. The sector’s forecasts see this growth as a key step toward a broader goal of reaching 30 GW of yearly additions in the 2030s. Investment in new wind farms across Europe amounted to 9 billion euros in the first half of 2026. Meanwhile, national governments conducted auctions that awarded over 17 GW of capacity, with an additional 26 GW scheduled for tender before the end of the year.

Europe’s Wind Power Sector Poised for a Record-Breaking Year

Despite the impressive installation numbers, industry representatives issued warnings about ongoing structural bottlenecks that threaten long-term growth prospects. While Germany moved forward by approving permits for over 9 GW of onshore wind in the first half of 2026, permitting activity slowed in several key markets, including France, Spain, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Ireland. Although the industry is on track for a record year in wind power installations, executives emphasize that bureaucratic delays in grid connection approvals could hinder future project timelines.

In a public statement accompanying the report, WindEurope’s CEO Tinne Van der Straeten remarked that 2026 might set an all-time record for wind installations. However, she cautioned that maintaining this momentum requires ongoing effort. Van der Straeten underlined the importance of government decisions related to permitting regulations, auction design, grid infrastructure development, and industrial electrification in the upcoming months. These factors will determine whether the industry can sustain its current growth pace.

Industry Group Outlines Five Key Policy Areas to Support Continued Growth in the EU

To preserve the current expansion rate, the industry association highlighted five essential policy priorities for EU authorities and member states. These include simplifying permitting procedures and expanding regional transmission infrastructure. The group also recommended directing revenues from the Emissions Trading System toward industrial electrification initiatives. Additionally, they called for establishing a binding renewable energy target for 2040. Under current projections, Europe’s installed wind capacity is expected to reach 436 GW by 2030, accounting for 27% of the EU’s total electricity consumption.

European ministries and regulators are anticipated to review these policy suggestions during upcoming ministerial meetings ahead of the winter heating season. Ongoing data collection on turbine installations and auction results will be maintained through official trade portals to track adherence to the EU’s decarbonization objectives.
