The Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) has been formally accepted as a member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). It will support RCU’s goal of protecting natural ecosystems, habitats, and biodiversity by designing and establishing nature reserves; enhancing and restoring degraded ecosystems and ecological processes; and reintroducing native species.

A government membership status was granted to the RCU for its commitment to conservation. By attending the IUCN annual meetings and quadrennial congresses, for example, RCU will be able to use the expert knowledge of 18,000 IUCN experts to inform a global audience about the outcomes of its work at AlUla.

Dr Bruno Oberle, Director General of IUCN, welcomed the Royal Commission for Al Ula to the organization. The inclusion of RCU as a Member will enhance IUCN’s presence in the region, as well as strengthen the Union’s commitment to the good governance of the world’s natural resources and the environment, he added.
