While Germany moved forward by approving permits for over 9 GW of onshore wind in the first half of 2026, permitting activity slowed in several key markets, including France, Spain, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Ireland. Although the industry is on track for a record year in wind power installations, executives emphasize that bureaucratic delays in grid connection approvals could hinder future project timelines.
In a public statement accompanying the report, WindEurope’s CEO Tinne Van der Straeten remarked that 2026 might set an all-time record for wind installations. However, she cautioned that maintaining this momentum requires ongoing effort. Van der Straeten underlined the importance of government decisions related to permitting regulations, auction design, grid infrastructure development, and industrial electrification in the upcoming months. To preserve the current expansion rate, the industry association highlighted five essential policy priorities for EU authorities and member states. These include simplifying permitting procedures and expanding regional transmission infrastructure. The group also recommended directing revenues from the Emissions Trading System toward industrial electrification initiatives. Additionally, they called for establishing a binding renewable energy target for 2040. Under current projections, Europe’s installed wind capacity is expected to reach 436 GW by 2030, accounting for 27% of the EU’s total electricity consumption.
European ministries and regulators are anticipated to review these policy suggestions during upcoming ministerial meetings ahead of the winter heating season. Ongoing data collection on turbine installations and auction results will be maintained through official trade portals to track adherence to the EU’s decarbonization objectives.
